Federal Reserve Building Used as Base in Urban War Games

September 1st, 2012

This photo was taken by an attorney named Steven Reeves and posted at the Star Tribune. It was taken from the Well Fargo Bank building in downtown Minneapolis and is of one of many Black Hawk military helicopters seen running training drills over the city. This helicopter circled over the Stone Arch Bridge, hovered next to the Fifth Street Towers and ultimately landed at the Minneapolis military base…

What’s that? There is no military base in downtown Minneapolis (yet)? My mistake… it landed on the roof the Federal Reserve building.

The helicopters come from the US Special Operations Command, which the Star Tribune called an “elite and secretive military unit based in Florida” that’s been conducting two weeks of “urban warfare training” in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

But it’s not just aerial training. Ken McGraw, deputy public affairs officer with the Special Operations Command, compared it to SWAT training. He said, ”The training includes tactics used in close-quarters battle — small-unit engagement at short ranges in confined areas, building- and room-clearing operations; dynamic entry — breaching doors or walls with explosives.” In other words, full blown, house to house, military assault on an urban civilian population.

Currently they are paying civilians to play the enemy in their war games. The question remains… is that civilian populations domestic or foreign? McGraw said, “training is not for a specific contingency” but whether they’ve admitted it or not, they’ve answered that question by their actions. The training is being conducted in collaboration with the Minneapolis and St. Paul police. Last time I checked domestic police officers don’t hand out a lot of seat belt tickets to divers in Kandahar.

Melissa Hill, a Minneapolis records clerk, witnessed multiple helicopters swirling around the Fed building and as well as troops stationed on the roof and was unnerved. ”To me it’s really frightening,” she said. “Military copters flying around in our airspace in an urban setting — it kind of conditions people to accept a police state.”

When asked for comment Patti Lorenzen, a spokesbureaucrat for the Federal Reserve, said “The law enforcement activity in the vicinity of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis is part of previously announced routine training exercises. These exercises were scheduled to occur between 7 p.m. and midnight during the week of Aug. 27, 2012. We have no further comment.”

Awfully fishy if you ask me.

About the Author: Davi Barker

In grade school Davi refused to recite the pledge of allegiance because he didn't understand what it meant. He was ordered to do as he was told. In college he spent hours scouring through the congressional record trying to understand this strange machine. That's where he discovered Dr. Ron Paul. In 2007 he joined the End The Fed movement and found a political home with the libertarians. The Declaration of Independence claims that the government derives its power “from the consent of the governed." He does not consent.
