The Seal of the Federal Reserve Looks Like The Punisher Logo

September 19th, 2013

Thursday is Easter egg day on the Silver Circle Silver Underground blog, when we discuss some of the film’s hidden allusions and pop culture references, which are waiting to be discovered by observant viewers. Watch for them while you are checking out the movie on --> -->DVD or Blu-Ray --> -->.

You might notice that, in the film, the Federal Reserve has a particularly menacing logo. As it happens, the real-life Federal Reserve’s seal looks oddly similar to the unmistakable logo of Marvel Comics’ vigilante, The Punisher. Check out the comic character’s iconic crest below, and join us after the break for a discussion on how the team behind Silver Circle tweaked the Fed’s logo for the movie.

The Fed’s Official Seal’s Similarities to The Punisher’s Logo

During Silver Circle‘s production phase, Director Pasha Roberts noticed that the official seal of the Federal Reserve system bears some striking similarities to the crest emblazoned on the chest of Marvel’s vigilante antihero, The Punisher. The Fed’s seal contains an eagle perched on some type of column, which descends into an incomplete pattern of lines. The iconic logo which appears on The Punisher’s chest, designed collaboratively by Marvel’s Gerry Conway and John Romita, Sr, features a death’s head skull with teeth that descend similarly.

In fact, the eagle portion of the Fed’s logo is shaped a lot like the skull outline on The Punisher’s crest. Given that the Marvel antihero’s symbol is one of the most vicious-looking icons in pop culture history, it almost seems appropriate that the Federal Reserve, one of the most destructive organizations in world history, would have a seal that coincidentally bears some similarities.

Retooling the Fed’s Logo to Accentuate the Likeness

In an effort to recast the Federal Reserve in a more appropriately menacing light, Silver Circle Director Pasha Roberts had the Fed’s logo re-textured to blend the two icons into one. Some of the elements from the seal were removed to bring out the eagle’s skull-like shape. The background colors and image textures were tweaked to give it that Punisher feel.

The Silver Circle team loves comics, and the influence can be seen throughout the film. In fact, the movie itself has a graphic novel adaptation. The vibrant comic fan community has been supportive of the movie, which has been featured at a variety of comic conventions across the US. Unquestionably, this Easter egg is a hat tip to, not only opponents of the Federal Reserve, but also fans of great comics like The Punisher. For those in need of cool new gear to wear to an upcoming comic con, the Silver Circle store features a T-shirt with the re-tooled, hardcore Federal Reserve logo, as it appears in the film.
