The “Casually Spraying” Meme: Using Art and Humor to Reflect on the UC Davis Pepper Spray Incident

November 22nd, 2011

After the world look on in outrage at a widely-circulated video of police wantonly spraying the faces of peaceful students with a substance that is essentially super-concentrated hot sauce, a new Internet meme emerged as artists and commentators photoshopped images of the offending police officer into various other scenarios and added captions proclaiming that the officer is just “casually spraying” this or that thing. The meme has been dubbed, “Casually Pepper Spray Everything Cop.”

Here are some examples:

Don’t mind me. Just watering my hippies… with burning chemicals.

“Casually Spraying Crispus” –this one is edgy! It likens the confrontation at UC Davis to the Boston Massacre during America’s fight for independence.

“Casually Spraying on A Sunday Afternoon” –this one makes a powerful visual statement. The police officer is entirely at odds with the imagery around him, an unwelcome intruder spraying malice and violence into a scene that is otherwise peaceful, civilized, and elegant.

“Casually Pepper Spraying the Constitution” –pretty straightforward.

“The Dark Side of the Law” –lol. If only the police shot rainbows at protesters instead of pressurized, concentrated hot sauce.
