This Week in Gun Control Mania

January 30th, 2013

Some kind of insanity is sweeping the land. Everywhere I look, every headline is something to do with firearms, and they aren’t all the same story. Last week Obama made his controversial proposal to curb gun violence and it has apparently set the country on fire. The plan includes aggressive measures like urging Congress to ban magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, and incomprehensible measures like appointing a Director of the ATF, an office which apparently sat empty until now.

There are a lot of stories to cover, so we’re going to take kind of a scatter shot approach. So brace yourself.

NEW YORK

As tyranny so often does, we’ll be starting in New York City. As we covered earlier this week the NYPD is testing portable body scanners on the people of New York to detect concealed weapons. The van-mounted unit scans pedestrians on the street. No warrant. No suspicion. No nothing. So I’m sure that makes everyone feel soo much safer, but check out what the people of New York are up to.

After an unpopular gun control law was rammed through New York gun owners are planning what’s being called the largest act of civil disobedience in state history by refusing to comply with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s new registration mandate. The so-called SAFE Act constitutes the most aggressive anti-gun legislation in the country. It bans magazines over seven bullets, requires accross the board registration of all semi-automatic rifles, and perhaps most offensively it requires doctors to report patients who “express indications that they may have thoughts about hurting themselves or others” to law enforcement.

Preparations are being made for mass resistance. Thousands of people are preparing to defy the law according to Brian Olesen of American Shooters Supply, one of largest gun dealers in the state. Threats of caging gun owners for up to a year and seizing their arms have been issued by governor’s office. New York would have to build new prisons. Lawmakers say the scheme is aimed at eventual broad firearm confiscation, so you can imagine why gun owners aren’t excited to tell lawmakers where their firearms are.

SEATTLE

Cops in Seattle Washington held their first gun BuyBack program in 20 years this week. Cops offered $100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles, and $200 for “assault weapons” (whatever that means), but private gun collectors showed up in droves and outbid them, trading wads of cash for gun held by the large crowd waiting in line for the BuyBack program.

John Diaz, Seattles Police Chief, reportedly, “wasn’t pleased,” but admitted it’s perfectly legal for private individuals to buy and sell firearms (for now). Mayor Mike McGinn called the private transactions, “a loophole that needs to be closed,” so you can bet it won’t be legal for long.

By 11:00 am the entire crowd abandoned the police BuyBack program and headed for the gun dealers, forcing the police officers to close early.

Milwaukee

This week Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. told residents it’s time to take a firearms safety course and buy a gun. Check it out:

Just awesome! Statists can stand around and advocate gun confiscation all day long, but when a public figure advocates gun ownership you can bet it’ll get a response. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett issued a public statement saying, “Apparently, Sheriff David Clarke is auditioning for the next Dirty Harry movie.”

Clarke responded, “Several years ago, a tire-iron-wielding suspect beat Mayor Tom Barrett to within inches of his life. I would think that he would be a lot more sensitive to people being able to defend themselves in such instances. A firearm and a plan of defense would have come in handy for him that day.” Clarke also said gun control advocates were “sheep.

Stories like this are legion right now. I’m sure you’ve come across half a dozen others. Please feel free to share them in the comments section. But I want to leave you with this.

On Monday, renowned author, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Jim Garrow made a shocking Facebook :

I have just been informed by a former senior military leader that Obama is using a new “litmus test” in determining who will stay and who must go in his military leaders. Get ready to explode folks. “The new litmus test of leadership in the military is if they will fire on US citizens or not.” Those who will not are being removed.

Gun control advocates need to think long and hard about what they are advocating when they want US citizens to be disarmed by the very government that is being groomed to fire on US citizens.

About the Author: Davi Barker

In grade school Davi refused to recite the pledge of allegiance because he didn't understand what it meant. He was ordered to do as he was told. In college he spent hours scouring through the congressional record trying to understand this strange machine. That's where he discovered Dr. Ron Paul. In 2007 he joined the End The Fed movement and found a political home with the libertarians. The Declaration of Independence claims that the government derives its power “from the consent of the governed." He does not consent.
