Rebel of the Week: Moroccan Libertarian Leader Dr. Nouh El Harmouzi Speaks in Cairo!
April 20th, 2011When we see the rolling revolutions in the Arab world we’re struck by the same hope and fear that we face here at home. We cross our fingers that a more libertarian system will emerge after the collapse, even that means its a well-functioning democracy and not a voluntaryist order, but we often fear that something worse will come along to supplant what had previously existed.
When Mubarak was being taken out of power the corporate media in America deeply feared the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, and whatever, I don’t find their concerns of something worse emerging to be wholly unfounded. If America collapsed people would probably blame it on the government not keeping a tighter rein on the “free market” and create anti-libertarian policy for us to live under, as if we’d let that happen.
This being said, how glad we are here at Silver Underground to have rebels like Dr. Nouh El Harmouzi. He runs the Arabic website Minbaralhurriyya, which is dedicated to promoting a vision of the rule of law, private property and an Arab world full of open societies and libertarian values.
His website is an initiative of the Atlas Economic Research Foundation, so unsurprisingly perennial libertarian globetrotter Dr. Tom Palmer recently showed up in Tahrir Square in Cairo to record the good doctor’s speech.
I’ll let both of their work speech for itself. Thank you for all you do for freedom and best of luck in spreading the much-needed libertarian values. You have your work cut out for you, and how glad we are that you do it.

“My name is Nouh El Harmouzi from Moroccco, and I come to you with a message of respect, a message of dignity, a message of love, a letter of encouragement. I want to tell you that Morocco and the Maghreb and many countries look to your experience as an example, and we look to your revolution as a symbol to all the Arab world. I want to tell you that we hope and we want to see a strong Egypt, strong through a CIVIL state [e.g., not military and not religious] — an Egypt of FREEDOM. Thank you Egyptians for this valuable lesson for the Arabic world. I have one extremely important message to tell you. From the Moroccan people who love you and who want to follow your example: No negotiation for your freedom anymore! Pay attention to keep your freedom! Once again, I encourage you to create a CIVIL state [not military and not religious] and don’t let the politicians steal your freedom! The free Egyptian people can create miracles and can build a developed society. Viva Egypt! Viva the youth who made the revolution! Viva freedom!”
