First Floating Oil Rig to Hit the Sea in 2017

May 23rd, 2011

Weighing in at just over 600,000 tons and about 1/3 of a mile long is Shell’s first ever floating oil refinery. The company plans to set this $10 billion dollar project to sea in 2017 just off the coast of Australia.

Controversy is already looming in the wake of this big announcement from Shell. How safe is the rig? What about fierce weather? Is this a target for terrorism? Environmentalists are asking how safe the refinery is and if its cost benefit is also beneficial to the environment. By the time its launch hits, we’ll be almost to the Rebel setting of 2019 and the Rebels will be the ones dealing with the repercussions.
