Police Order Man to Stop Wearing Bunny Suit

August 5th, 2011

Call it creepy, call it eccentricity, but if you’re a member of the Salmon, Idaho police department, call it illegal.

Acting on requests by neighbors, police told 34-year old William Falkingham to stop wearing a bunny costume around town, due to complaints that his doing so was scaring children. Many of Mr. Falkingham’s closest friends defended his right to wear the costume as a symbol of his natural eccentricity, which has done no harm to nobody up until this point. However, due to the police pressure on him, Mr. Falkingham has said that, while he likes wearing a bunny costume, he has agreed to stop doing so.

While I agree with the police and the citizens of Salmon with the notion that a grown man wearing a bunny suit is creepy, he still has a right to wear it. Nowhere in the Constitution, or in any law code on the books, gives policemen the right to tell people what they can and can’t wear, bunny suits included. Fortunately, this little incident didn’t lead to any arrests or unnecessary court cases, and it was handled with civility, but it should still be noted that this kind of police action is a violation of free speech, and shouldn’t be repeated so readily.
