Record Gun Sales!
January 4th, 2012
According to reports from the FBI, over 1.5 million background checks were requested from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System by gun dealers on customers purchasing new firearms in December. December 23rd marked the second busiest single day for buying guns in American history with 102,222 background checks. The record is 129,166 background checks made on the day after Thanksgiving just a month ago. According to the FBI only 1.3% of customers are denied permission to buy a weapon, and that’s just the number of customers. If they were shopping for Christmas they very well may have purchased multiple firearms to give to friends and family as gifts, and maybe even some ammo as stocking stuffers.
Many people think I’m crazy for saying that this makes me feel safer but the fact is that this is a pattern I’ve seen before. In 2008, shortly before the election, there was a huge surge in gun purchases, and shortly after that violent crime reached a 35-year low, including a 49% decrease in murder since it’s peak in 1991, a new 45-year low. The statistics bear it out every time. In the words of Robert Heinlein, “a well armed society is a polite society.”
There are many explanations for the surge in gun buying. Perhaps with all the talk of police budget cuts and layoffs people understand that they are responsible for their own self-defense. Or maybe when agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are caught selling hand guns to Mexican drug cartels people understand that law enforcement can’t keep guns out of the black market. What ever the reason one thing is clear, people lack confidence in the state, and that’s always good news.
If you ask me the reason is people believe there’s tighter firearms legislation coming down the pipeline, and here’s why. The Obama administration has made it perfectly clear that it doesn’t give a damn about civil liberties, but pretty soon it’s going to be time to go into campaign mode. Obama’s not exactly popular with his own supporters right now, but if there’s one civil liberty that he can attack to win back the left it’s the Second Amendment.
