NH Legislator Openly Calls for Persecution of Free Staters
January 17th, 2013New Hampshire state legislator Cynthia Chase, a Democrat from the Keene area, ruined her political career recently when she decried a group of her own constituents as the “single biggest threat the state is facing today.” The Free State Project is an organization of liberty-minded individuals from around the United States who have been moving to New Hampshire to enjoy its tradition of freedom.
Rather than claiming this as evidence that New Hampshire’s policies are attracting new residents, the misguided politician has announced a new policy agenda aimed at driving them from the state. Her openly-stated plan is to restrict freedoms and to make the environment in New Hampshire so unpleasant that Free Staters will no longer want to live there. Check out the video below, and let’s talk specifics after the jump.
The Politics of Spite
It’s hard to understand what Cynthia Chase was thinking when she penned a lengthy xenophobic diatribe against Free State Project activists who have moved to New Hampshire in recent years. Even more bizarre, she openly called for policies that would make New Hampshire a terrible place to live on purpose, so that people would move away. Is she of the belief that the majority of her constituents share her spite towards Free Staters to such a degree that they are willing to live in total despair just to encourage a few new residents to leave?
In her rant against her own constituents, she said, “In the opinion of this Democrat, Free Staters are the single biggest threat the state is facing today. There is, legally, nothing we can do to prevent them from moving here… In this country you can move anywhere you choose and they have that same right. What we can do is to make the environment here so unwelcoming that some will choose not to come, and some may actually leave. One way is to pass measures that will restrict the ‘freedoms’ that they think they will find here.”
Politics 101: Don’t Openly Call for the Persecution of Specific Constituents
Politicians are supposed to at least appear to like all of their constituents. Most citizens want public policy that makes their state a great place to live. Also, it’s politically inadvisable to announce policies aimed at driving certain groups of constituents out of the state.
Nevertheless, Cynthia Chase did, and it’s likely that her political career is over. New Hampshire residents are probably not going to back her plan to make the state an unpleasant place to live on purpose just to alienate certain newcomers. This will go down in history as one of the most extraordinary political gaffes of all time.
