In recent months, the National Security Agency’s spying scandal has been dominating the headlines, as mainstream Americans now realize that their phone calls and emails are being hijacked by an intelligence service that allows newly-hired private contractors to access the data. When one such contractor, Edward Snowden, leaked the details of these programs to the media, the subject became a national issue.
Indie rock band They Might Be Giants, however, were a full 7 years ahead of the general public on this story, as the band released a surprisingly prescient free ringtone back in 2006, featuring the lyrics, “Call connected through the NSA/Complete transmission through the NSA/Suspending your rights for the duration of the permanent war.” Check out the song in the player below, pick it up for free on They Might Be Giants’ website, and let’s talk about the right to privacy after the jump.

Back in February we speculated that a leaked Justice Department memo titled, “Lawfulness of a Lethal Operation Directed Against a U.S. Citizen” justified a drone strike on the Free State Project. The possibility mostly concerned the drone memo’s vague, easily-met conditions to justify murder, and New Hampshire State Representative Cynthia Chase saying that, “Free Staters are the single biggest threat the State is facing today.” Now it seems the Concord Police Department is just openly calling Free Staters domestic terrorists.

Barack Obama’s signature bill, the deceptively-named Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, is beginning to crumble, as even some Democrats now worry that the legislation will have disastrous consequences. The rule changes on insurance companies have already driven health insurance prices through the roof. Implementation of the employer mandate has been delayed until after the midterm elections, leaving lower income workers on their own to deal with the individual mandate, which remains in place. Virtually no one understands how the law will work, and most individuals will be affected by the mandate as soon as January of 2014.
In a speech to Democrats, President Obama channeled Silver Circle villain Victor Brandt while trying to convince his own party that it was a good idea to pass a near-2000 page bill that radically reshapes the US health care system, written by insurance company lobbyists, without reading it first. Said President Obama to those who would blindly support his bill, “You’re on the right side of history.” Those who have already seen Silver Circle online or at one of our -->screening events --> may have felt a little deja vu after hearing of the President’s speech, as it was eerily similar to comments made in the movie by Silver Circle‘s villain, Federal Reserve Chairman Victor Brandt, in a discussion with one of the film’s protagonists, Jay Nelson.

Detroit, Michigan, once one of America’s most industrious cities, is currently suffering from the poisonous effects of a big government overdose, as most of its jobs and a large chunk of its population have fled the city limits, largely to states with greater economic freedom. In the meantime, services have collapsed as revenues dipped too far below the city’s unsustainable spending levels, plunging Detroit into the most dramatic municipal bankruptcy in US history.
Police response times have reached the one-hour-plus mark as the city no longer has the funds necessary to provide adequate police protection. Potholes go unfilled, and broken street lights aren’t getting replaced. In the midst of big government’s failures, The Detroit News is reporting that 47% of Detroit homeowners have quit paying their property taxes, which happen to be some of the highest in the nation.

The US Air Force and numerous intelligence agencies have been in communication with reptilian aliens from the planet Nibiru… just kidding. But keep that tin foil firmly fastened, because after this, orbital mind control lasers won’t seem so far fetched. I’ve got 10 (consult your I-Ching) one-time conspiracy theories that are now conspiracy facts. Read the rest of this entry »

In 2010, Army private Bradley Manning leaked classified information exposing crimes by members of the US military and the State Department to the website WikiLeaks. Most of the information that was made public pertained only to incidents of wrongdoing and did not detail operational plans in a way that resulted in some sort of specified successful attack by an enemy force. Some of the leaked diplomatic cables were instrumental in exposing information that led to Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East. Though he was arrested and held before a military tribunal, a significant number of people around the world view him as a hero.
Today, military judge Colonel Denise Lind found Bradley Manning not guilty of the most serious charge facing him — aiding the enemy. Had he been found guilty, he would have faced a life behind bars in a military prison. He faces 20 additional lesser charges, to some of which he plead guilty, but that the sentencing for the alternative charges will be far less severe. Manning’s not guilty verdict serves as a vindication for the millions of activists who believe him to be a whistleblower and not a traitor.

For years now, the Federal Reserve has been juicing the economy with quantitative easing, and Bernanke and his cohorts are now toying with the idea of ending the program if a set of arbitrary economic indicators are met, a move that would push interest rates up sharply. Investors have been put on notice that this could happen as soon as the end of the year, though it also may not, and both outcomes could lead to different types of disastrous consequences.
Will the Fed jerk rates up on banks, freezing credit markets during the holiday shopping season and causing a recession? If the central bank chooses not to, will investors fear inflation and rush to commodities, thus crushing the dollar? Ben Bernanke apparently doesn’t want to find out, because the word on the streets is that he plans to quit his job as Chairman of the Federal Reserve on January 31st of 2014, allowing him to quietly slip out of the exit right before the consequences of his fiscal mistakes become apparent to the general public.

You know, prior to 9/11 the very existence of the NSA was the stuff of conspiracy theory. We used to call it “No Such Agency” because if you talked about people acted like you were talking about Men In Black or being followed by black helicopters. The idea of a domestic spy ring was viewed as too tyrannical to exist. It would never happen in America. A decade later these spooks are an open secret, and no one in Congress seems surprised or concerned… except for Justin Amash.

In an interview with Larry King, the Nebraska-born southern-style comedian Larry the Cable Guy came out in favor of a libertarian political perspective when asked whether or not blue collar workers are typically conservative. The famed funnyman indicated that he is “more of a libertarian conservative as of late.” He went on to ask, “Why can’t people mind their own business?”
Larry King took the opportunity to check up on his position on gay marriage, to which Larry the Cable Guy responded, “It ain’t affecting my life at all.” The blue collar themed comedian went further with a suggestion to Americans, “Live your life, leave other people alone, and just enjoy your life. Enjoy being an American. It’s a great country.” Check out a video clip from the interview below, and let’s discuss the significance of his political transition after the jump.
