Rap News, Bruce Willis on Gun Rights

February 8th, 2013

Over the past few months, a legislative push to ban certain long rifles and high-capacity magazines has unleashed a raucous national debate over gun rights. Piers Morgan and Diane Feinstein have been leading the charge to ban guns amid protests from supporters of the Second Amendment.

Recently, Bruce Willis stepped into the fray, affirming his support for the right to keep and bear arms. Meanwhile, a grocer repelled robbers last week using a 17-round high capacity magazine. Rap News also produced a new music video that satires both sides of the debate over gun rights. Check that out in the embedded player below, and let’s discuss the most recent events that pertain to this debate after the jump.

Die Hard Star Bruce Willis Weighs in on Gun Rights

Most Hollywood actors seem to support further measures that would restrict the right to bear arms. Bruce Willis, however, deviates from this viewpoint. In a recent interview, he suggested that efforts to infringe on gun rights might result in further human rights violations, “I think that you can’t start to pick apart anything out of the Bill of Rights without thinking that it’s all going to become undone. If you take one out or change one law, then why wouldn’t they take all your rights away from you?”

He went further by dismissing the alleged link between violence in entertainment and real-world mass shootings, “No one commits a crime because they saw a film. There’s nothing to support that.” Ever since recent mass shootings spread panic throughout the nation, First Amendment rights have also been under threat, as politicians look to blame violent movies and video games for the actions of crazed killers.

Why Would Anyone Need a 17-Round Clip?

Osama Ghalayini knows why. A week ago, while at work at his grocery store, he was pinned in a corner at gunpoint by robbers. He broke free and reached for his gun as they opened fire. Fearing for his safety, he unleashed Hell with his 9mm Taurus, equipped with a 17-round clip. The sheer volume of rounds overwhelmed the attackers, who fled the scene.

Ghalayini’s family members believe that his gun, and its 17-round clip, saved his life. They are certain he would have been another victim of gun violence had he not been armed.

The right to bear arms is a fundamental one. As such, its purpose as a deterrent against tyranny is one of its most crucial features. By having the right to defend ourselves against any unlawful aggression, we have the means to protect and preserve the other rights recognized in the Constitution. This was the point being highlighted by Bruce Willis.

As the nation struggles with emotions following tragic mass shootings, we must keep a watchful eye on our rights. Governments tend to take advantage of crises like these to justify encroachments against fundamental liberties.
