Mark Millar to Leave Marvel

June 10th, 2011

It’s the end of an era in the comic book world, as comic book writer Mark Millar announced that he will be leaving Marvel to focus on creator-owned work, and his website Millarworld.

Mark Millar is best known as the man that brought Marvel into the 21st century, after decades in decline. He was one of the leading creators that made some of Marvel’s most popular superheroes into big-screen hits, including the Iron Man series, as well as his original comics-turned-movies Kickass, and Wanted, as well as the comic hits Wolverine, X-Men, Fantastic Four, He created what he jokingly considered a “media empire with creator-owned material”, which was a revolutionary development for an American comic media dominated by relatively few mainstream firms like Marvel and DC. As a result, independent creators are now able to make a name for themselves in a re-emerging market for superhero-driven comics.

Arguably the most successful of Millar's works that hit the big screen.

He will continue to write scripts for his own comics, such as Ultimate Avengers and a sequel to Kickass. His tenure at Marvel may be over, but his tireless ambition and determination saved a once-proud brand from extinction, and brought comic books into the 21st century in a big way.
