Movie Monday: Will Indian Movies Ever Hit it Big in US Territories?

As some of you may or may not know, we partner with an animation team in Mumbai. We constantly have our Skype windows open and sometimes video chats running between studios. You will even find some moments throughout Silver Circle that are heavily influenced by the Indian culture. However the question posed today is: Will India’s film companies ever reach the same heights as the US’s film companies? We all know India’s billion + population could max out the box office, however international territory is their target to dominate.

Who has the high hopes? Anil Ambani, the owner of the Reliance ADA group and Amit Khanna Reliance’s CEO that own 50% of Dreamworks are ready for the challenge. Reliance, the Indian media empire, co-produced Cowboys and Aliens, but are known for being the center of Bollywood in India and have even higher hopes. There are a few “promising” films coming from Reliance this year, including The Help, which has created a bit of controversy in the African-American community. Amit Khanna wants to also bring “Indian values” into the film world, but it’s speculated that working within the same channel as Dreamworks may not allow for that cultural direction. Khanna hasn’t seen the big break in terms of international westernized film, however they do have the studios and technology to compete.

I see the lower Box Office numbers as a sign of dying economies, not a failure on the Indian production company’s work. They need to keep in mind that they are entering the game at a volatile time; creativity and economical production is their best bet.
