Tasers: The New Line of Self-Defense
September 13th, 2011As we all know, tasers aren’t a stranger to law enforcement and as a matter of fact they’ve become the perfect way to Well it seems as though police practices are starting to spread to citizens who just want to defend themselves in violent situations that also produce a threat to their well-being.
59 year old, Leroy McKelvey, somehow managed to sneak a small palm-sized taser into a New York Jets game versus the Dallas Cowboys. Unfortunately, people peg so much emotion and loyalty to sports teams that showing up to a New York stadium supporting the opposing team is a threat to your health. Leroy is a Dallas fan. Even the Jet’s coach believes that stepping onto a home teams territory warrants a certain risk. After a few verbal altercations Leroy was jumped by 4-5 Jets fans and once in a defenseless position used his taser.
Leroy was arrested on assault and possession of illegal weapon charges, and was released on bail. You can see in a video taken by a nearby witness, Leroy was taken to the ground and was virtually powerless:
Two questions come up with this story…one specifically noted in the video above:
- How did Leroy McKelvey, on just a day or two after the 10th anniversary of 9/11 get a taser into a football stadium?
- Aside from the restrictions on weapons in a space such as a football field, what makes Leroy’s actions any worse than police’s tasered reactions to threatening suspects?
