Rebel of the Week: Adam Kokesh and all our Rebels in Uniform

February 22nd, 2012

It’s widely known, but seldom spoken in electoral politics that Ron Paul enjoys more donations from active duty military personal than all other candidates (including Obama) combined. It was the same in 2008, but you’d never know it watching mainstream coverage of the GOP primary. For that reason peace activist extraordinaire, Adam Kokesh organized a public demonstration of veterans and active duty military to send a single simple message, that Ron Paul is the choice of the troops. The military responded my issuing a notice prohibiting active duty personnel from marching, regardless of attire, and prohibiting reservists and retirees from wearing their uniform in the march. According to the notice such acts were punishable as, “Failure to Obey Orders or Regulation.” So, this week our chosen rebels are Adam Kokesh and every active duty or retired member who balked and marched anyway.

The march occurred Monday, and as you can see from the picture above and video below quite a few people defied these orders. They marched in formation from the Washington Monument to the White House chanting phrases such as “End the Fed” and “President Paul.” Civilians were invited to attend, but only veterans and active duty troops were in formation. Once at the White House they lined up and did an about face, turning their back on the White House, in Adam’s words, “in repudiation of Obama’s foreign policy of empire, policing the world, and serving the special interests of the military industrial complex.” Afterwards they performed a flag ceremony holding the salute one second for every soldier who has committed suicide since Obama took office (8 minutes), followed by a moment of silence for every soldier who has died in combat (21 minutes).

Adam Kokesh is no stranger to activism. He is a prominent member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, being a Marine himself, and the infamous host of Adam vs. The Man.

About the Author: Davi Barker

In grade school Davi refused to recite the pledge of allegiance because he didn't understand what it meant. He was ordered to do as he was told. In college he spent hours scouring through the congressional record trying to understand this strange machine. That's where he discovered Dr. Ron Paul. In 2007 he joined the End The Fed movement and found a political home with the libertarians. The Declaration of Independence claims that the government derives its power “from the consent of the governed." He does not consent.
