Movie Monday: Robot Jox

April 16th, 2012

Kind of a slow Movie Monday this week. No big analysis. No deep thoughts. Just some good old fashioned fighting robots. I’ve been thinking about this movie since I wrote the review for the Hunger Games, just because both were about a future where war is replaced by a gladiator-style game show. The similarities really end there. I saw this as a kid, and it’s just as terrible and predictable in that fantastic 80s cult film way as I remember.

Fifty years after a nuclear holocaust the surviving nations ban open warfare and agree to resolve conflicts by putting their best champions in giant robots and fighting to the death. When I saw that the two opposing super-nations were called “The Market” and “The Confederation” I thought there might be some long forgotten liberty themes from my childhood embedded in the film. No such luck. It’s just an artifact of the Cold War. There’s really no big ideas in this film whatsoever. But, if you want to see two big robots beat the crap out of each other, and having one of them called “The Market” makes it more meaningful for you, I found the movie free online. Check it out.

About the Author: Davi Barker

In grade school Davi refused to recite the pledge of allegiance because he didn't understand what it meant. He was ordered to do as he was told. In college he spent hours scouring through the congressional record trying to understand this strange machine. That's where he discovered Dr. Ron Paul. In 2007 he joined the End The Fed movement and found a political home with the libertarians. The Declaration of Independence claims that the government derives its power “from the consent of the governed." He does not consent.
