The Zoe Taylor Award presented to Meg McLain for Exceptional Courage, Principle and Virtue in Female Liberty Activism

June 22nd, 2012

For weeks now we’ve been accepting nominations for the first ever Zoe Taylor Award for exceptional courage, principle and virtue in female liberty activism, and we were overwhelmed with the responses. The award was presented before our first screening of the Silver Circle Movie yesterday at the Porcupine Freedom Festival. We recognized all the incredible women who were nominated (You can see the full list here), but in the end we decided to celebrate the passionate badass who most reminded us of Zoe Taylor, the lead heroine in our thriller-romance.

We are thrilled to present the first ever Zoe Taylor Award to Meg McLain. And although we’re sad that unforeseen circumstances prevented her from attending the award ceremony, all our best wishes are with her. I could go into specifically why she was perfect for this award, but nothing expresses it as well as the essay submitted by Nathan Cox, who nominated her.

I’d like to nominate Meg McLain.
Meg McLain has truly made a name for herself and has built a solid reputation, but even more importantly she’s proved that she is an effective and productive activist.

Meg is originally from Portland, Oregon. She moved to L.A, California to go to film school after high school. While living in L.A and going to film school and working side jobs on movie sets she ended up getting robbed and stabbed on two separate occasions. One of the occasions all of her film equipment was stolen. Because of this and her injury she couldn’t work for several months resulting in her going homeless for about 7 months or so. During the first three months of being homeless she lost about 100lbs. She found her way over to New Hampshire where she joined dozens of other activists and united in their shared goals being, self-ownership, more freedom – less government, personal responsibility, voluntaryism, agorism, etc. Without any of her equipment and the capital to get more, she quickly learned a new skill-set, graphic design. Meg’s Graphic design work has truly been inspirational as well as educational. She’s 100% Agorist. Over the last 3 years or so she’s been involved in numerous protests, outreach events, etc.

She made national news with her stand against the TSA by simply asking a few questions when they asked to her to go through the body scanner, airplane ticket ripped up as well as getting removed from the Airport in Florida as she tried to get back to New Hampshire. She later made National headlines at the Thomas Jefferson Silent Dance Party, along with other dancers, Eddie Free, Adam Kokesh (who got choke slammed) and others. She again made National News for her arrest at the Capitol in D.C, selling Lemonade for 10 cents a cup. A little more recently, here in Richmond, a woman was ticketed down by the James River because her 4yr old daughter was chalking on a rock. It was a $300+ dollar ticket which outraged a lot of local people here in the Richmond area. Meg found the woman on facebook, conversed with her and ended up organizing an extremely successful “Chalk the Police” event. About 3 dozen people came out in support of the mother and daughter who receive the ticket (and whom were also present and chalking as well) along with ALL of the local news media outlets. No arrests were made and the message made was clear and present: Chalking is NOT a crime. Nor is selling Lemonade, or silently dancing next to a statute.

These are just some of the most recent example of her courage, principles and virtue. She’s been residing in Richmond helping my efforts in activism, outreach and education and has been a TREMENDOUS help and asset.

She has receive countless emails and messages encouraging her and praising her for her courage, principles & inspiration. There are many different activists and types of activists. Some have proven to be more effective than others. Meg has made a solid example of a peaceful activist for the cause of Freedom & Non- Aggression.

About the Author: Davi Barker

In grade school Davi refused to recite the pledge of allegiance because he didn't understand what it meant. He was ordered to do as he was told. In college he spent hours scouring through the congressional record trying to understand this strange machine. That's where he discovered Dr. Ron Paul. In 2007 he joined the End The Fed movement and found a political home with the libertarians. The Declaration of Independence claims that the government derives its power “from the consent of the governed." He does not consent.
