Money Monday: French Silver “Dime” Cards from La Monnaie Saine

August 20th, 2012

Did you know that the Don’t Tread on Meme Silver Dime Card idea was international? I didn’t until I heard heard the Frenchmen, Gilles Laurant and Edouard Hesse of La Monnaie Saine interviewed on Declare Your Independence with Ernie Hancock.

Gilles Laurant and Edouard Hesse were turned on by the Ron Paul campaign and wanted to find a libertarian candidate they could support in France, where “libertarianism” is still called “liberalism” and “liberalism” is called “socialism.” But there were no such candidates, so they ran a fictional campaign for Bastiat 2012 with the slogan “Legalisez la Liberte.” Frederic Bastiat was a French classical liberal assembly member and economist in the early 19th century. He is recognized as one of the first economists to describe the concept of opportunity cost. So, they reprinted many of Bastiat’s articles and essays as an economic educational campaign for a population who is utterly miseducated on the subject. For more on Frederic Bastiat in English check out the Bastiate Institute.

When they came across the Silver Dime Cards produced by Don’t Tread on Meme, which are pre-1965 silver dimes laminated in wallet-sized cards for ease of commerce, they went ahead and created their own Silver Franc Cards, which they call “Honest Franc Cards” or its equivalent in French. Like here, the cards are a powerful tool to demonstrate the concept of inflation to the general public. When a Silver Dime costs $5 and the Silver Franc costs €4 it sends the message home pretty clearly. They made Frederic Bastiat cards, “Friends of Ron Paul” Cards and even a French Atlas Shrugged card. Qui Est John Galt?

In addition they helped develop a French translation of the Silver Calculator App, which is an Android or iPhone app you can use to fascilitate transactions in a wide variety of alternative currencies, including the --> -->Silver Circle Rebel Rounds --> -->.

Gilles reports that the youth in France are largely Communist or Socialist and there are only Socialist candidates to vote for. In addition, Classical Liberalism is extremely demonized by the dominant culture. So they have an uphill battle trying to protect themselves as the Euro crashes. In many ways it’s like being a modern physician in a time of medieval plague when the sick subscribe to a demonic model of illness. You can diagnose the disease, and you can prescribe a perfectly viable cure, but so long as the sick reject science as demonic there’s not a lot you can do to help them.

Here’s the best part in my mind. The product is virtually identical to the Silver Dime Cards, except they use Silver Francs instead of Silver Dimes, and the cards are sized for European wallets, not American wallets, but La Monnaie Saine is not connected to Don’t Tread On Meme. This is a decentralized effort by an independent group of silver Rebels, and as I’m so fond of pointing out, the answer to centralized power is not another centralized power… it’s decentralized power. If the Feds take down Don’t Tread On Meme, La Monnaie Saine goes on. And if they take down La Monnaie Saine, Shire Silver goes on. And if they take down Shire Silver, Silver Circle goes on. There is no stopping and idea whose time has come

About the Author: Davi Barker

In grade school Davi refused to recite the pledge of allegiance because he didn't understand what it meant. He was ordered to do as he was told. In college he spent hours scouring through the congressional record trying to understand this strange machine. That's where he discovered Dr. Ron Paul. In 2007 he joined the End The Fed movement and found a political home with the libertarians. The Declaration of Independence claims that the government derives its power “from the consent of the governed." He does not consent.
