Generations of Americans have viewed New York City as a symbol of freedom. Throughout modern history, desperate refugees, fleeing from all the world’s various calamities, have gone through Hell to reach the shores of the Big Apple and looked upon the Statue of Liberty through blurry eyes full of tears of joy, knowing they’ve finally reached a place where they can be truly free. However, thanks to the policies of today’s politicians, New York City’s freedom itself is under siege.

The state recently criminalized certain types of firearms and firearm accessories which many New Yorkers already own, compromising public safety. The right to bear arms is all but gone in New York City. Mayor Bloomberg banned soda sales over a certain size, making it impossible for New York families to get 2-liter sodas with pizza deliveries. Meanwhile, the NYPD has been engaging in a dastardly new policy called “stop and frisk” whereby people are selected for random searches without probable cause or a warrant. Internal reports have shown that this has been used primarily for racial profiling, as 9 out of 10 searches are conducted on African American or Latino residents.

Nanny Bloomberg’s Bizarre, Arbitrary War on Soda Containers

Sodas contain lots of sugar and calories. As such, it’s important to drink them in moderation. However, most foods are dangerous when multiple servings are consumed at once. Nearly any activity becomes risky when moderation is thrown out the window. Good health comes from developing productive habits and attitudes about fitness and nutrition, not by government bans on containers of various sizes.

Prohibitions of this nature don’t work. Similar initiatives fail to stop people from doing drugs, and they will also fail to prevent people from drinking multiple servings of soda at once. Instead, sweet-toothed New Yorkers will be forced to buy multiple smaller containers, thus producing more environmentally-destructive waste. The government can’t use force to create a society full of Jack LaLannes. It can, however, create a precedent by which future politicians can ban more and more products that people use each day.

Restoring New York’s Legacy of Freedom

The Big Apple needs a freedom makeover. The random searches need to stop. The frisking of people based on profiling risks reversing the hard-fought civil rights movement. High, oppressive taxes are driving wealthy entrepreneurs and businesses out of the city. Arbitrary bans on products should be reversed. Politicians in NYC should trust the ability of New Yorkers to solve their own problems. After all, this is the community that lived through the 9/11 attacks.

For those in New York who would like to meet more liberty-minded activists, consider . The Silver Circle movie promotes freedom through the medium of entertainment. We will be working together to inform others about the official New York City premiere of the film, which runs from March 22nd to March 28th at Cinema Village East. It’s a great opportunity to meet and network with other like-minded activists.
