Rebel of the Week: Star Power

September 15th, 2010

If any of you pay attention to the happening trends or silliness from the “E” shows of the world, I’m guessing you all saw the notorious outfit that was dragged across the stage at the highly regarded MTV Video Music Awards.

Many may think I will take this fashion extravaganza on a satirical path, however, I actually don’t think Lady Gaga is half as bad as her not-so-musical counter part, MTV. So reasoning for being named “Rebel of the Week” let me explain…

As an individual we all have our opportunities to stand out and some succeed to the levels of Lady Gaga.  Her trick seems to be setting herself apart and sometimes on a whole other planet (refer to picture above) from the rest of the industry.  Now that she has reached, what some may say the top, she is also using her “star power” to enact change around her.

As you know anti-fed supporters as well as supporters of personal responsibility do not have too many celebrities backing them.  In past posts we have highlighted some instances where celebrities have helped the fight for liberty.  Recently, Gaga tweeted back and forth with Senator Harry Reid about the recent “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” legislation that was once again put on the table.  By Gaga addressing her concern for this publicly she urged others make phone calls and begin talking about the issue.  She even brought gay service men to the VMA show as dates, using it as a conversational topic in one of her many award speeches.

Whether you agree on the issue or not, I’m not here to make that decision for you, she did use to her advantage a popular platform to promote taking a proactive stance instead of just bitching about it in your living room.

Many liberty lovers have practiced this technique when wanting something from government officials, and perhaps Gaga is building up a generation to seek out the change they wish to see.  As we all know younger generations are disenfranchised with politics and the system, thus having powerful celebrities to encourage their activism is a plus.  There is a down side however, when the celebrity is misinformed.  Perhaps that can be a whole other post.

Philosophically speaking celebrities who use the “star power” to an advantage greater than selling records or movies surely stands out from the endless supply of botox-filled celebs in Hollywood.  Lady Gaga you are a rebel and we wish you continue to educate yourself and others on freedom and liberty.  One of these days we will get celebs to tweet about ending the fed with all of Congress!
