Former IMF Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn Released From House Arrest
July 1st, 2011
The sexual assault case involving former IMF chief and 2012 French presidential candidate Dominique Strauss-Kahn, which became a worldwide story of mystery, anger, and shock, took another turn today. DSK was released from house arrest without bail after it was determined that the credibility of the alleged victim was in question.
Evidence that surfaced involving this case included a phone call from the hotel maid at the center of this controversy to an incarcerated man about the benefits of bringing charges against DSK, implying that there may have been a more monetary motive for getting him thrown in jail, rather than for personal justice.
DSK is still not out of the woods yet though. He will still need to go back to New York as necessary, which includes a July 18th hearing.
Back in France, there were rumors that DSK may enter the presidential race after all as the Socialist Party candidate, a race he was favored to win before his arrest May 14th. Many of his supporters were jubilant upon hearing the news of his release, yet party officials urged caution because the case is still pending.
Regardless of the outcome of this case, it put as much of a black eye on the American justice system as it did on DSK, given the nature of his treatment in the hands of the NYPD, which included a “prep walk” in front of the media, as well as a squad of police officers surrounding him in court as if he were a serial killer. Public opinion on both sides of the ocean had already considered him guilty, but this did not mean our vaunted judicial system had to either, and it is a disgrace that there was such an aggressive handling of a man who is now looking more and more likely of being innocent.
