Rebel of the Week: 9/11 Truth Movement
September 7th, 2011In the days leading up to 9/11′s 10th anniversary, emotions bulldoze through my brain, taking me back to my freshman year in high school watching those towers fall down on live television. I remember not understanding the implications of what was happening. I had no clue what this meant for the US as a country. Never in my life would I have imagined that the post-9/11 world would be a place of intolerance and injustice.
I immersed myself in the liberty movement 7 years after this attack on the Twin Towers; not because I was seeking truth about 9/11, but because I appreciated the values placed on civil liberties, real money, and the “blowback” theory from Congressman Ron Paul made a lot of sense to me.
There are several subsets of the liberty movement. Some overlap. Some don’t. The “9/11 Truthers” have been some of the most passionate and resilient in their cause. If you ask me how I feel about their truths I would shamefully reply, “I am on the fence.” I’ve said it for years now…perhaps because I’m denying evidence or maybe I’m too afraid to admit I think 9/11 wasn’t some Al Qaeda attack, out loud, or maybe because it’s just not true.
The idea exists that 9/11 was orchestrated by the government of this country. Many Truthers are made out to be citizens so out of touch with reality screaming “Building 7!” and “Demolitions!”. I don’t think that’s true. The thought of 9/11 being an inside job shakes convictions of any outsider to the point of uncomfortableness. I believe, because of this, Truthers get a bad rap. Many people don’t even want to question the world around them, too scared to see what might be a lie. This is why I want to award the constant seekers of clear and honest truth, the 9/11 Truthers, the Rebel of the Week Prize.
You can disagree and find it distasteful during such a sensitive moment in the year to recognize such rebellious figures of the 21st century, but without this faction of liberty-lovers pushing for explanations, where they were never given, we will never know what really happened that dark, sad day.
Truther’s relentless fight to have the government either admit to what they have done or uncover some unanswered questions, leaves me feeling inspired about certain issues I feel passionately about (not saying that this couldn’t be one of those issues). Their attitude and hard, unpaid work can not be appreciated enough. If more people did this with the tax system, more of our foreign policy, the Federal Reserve, and political back-door deals, the US might have a less corrupt system. The US might have a system that would have to face the repercussions for lying and manipulating.
Thank you 9/11 Truthers for your dedication. Continue asking questions about 9/11…to the rest of you, keep asking the questions that impassion you! And to the families, friends, and residents of NYC you are in our thoughts during this week and weekend as we remember the people we lost in such a terrible tragedy.
