Rebel of the Week: James Miller of University of Wisconsin, Avid Firefly Fan

December 28th, 2011

We love when our worlds combine, and that’s exactly what happened as the smash-fan-funded-hit Firefly and FIRE supported a First Amendment right of a professor to display a movie quote on his office door. The comic/fantasy world conjoined so gracefully with the liberty community to produce a wonderful AND inspirational story.

Professor James Miller, a “theater geek” and avid Firefly fan put a quote outside of this office on a print out that read, “You don’t know me, son, so let me explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you’ll be awake. You’ll be facing me. And you’ll be armed.” Security officers in the university building reported the movie quote to the administration who took it down off of this door. If you haven’t heard of Firefly, you must learn about how dedicated these fans are…it will really put this story into perspective. Professor Miller then made a comeback…

I’m happy to see it is not only students who are standing up for their First Amendment rights on campuses around the country. You’d think these educational fortresses would have the least resistance towards free speech, but it seems to be one of top places to find speech codes and restrictions. Thank you to FIRE also for representing this college professor, who was brave enough to speak up! Congrats James Miller on the Rebel of the Week award!
