Fed #News Friday – The Federal Reserve is now on Twitter!

March 16th, 2012

This week the Federal Reserve Bank, apparently looking for a little abuse, officially joined millions of users on the popular social media website, Twitter. Yes, that’s right: you can now follow Ben Bernanke and company on Twitter. The Fed’s new official Twitter handle is . What on earth would the world’s most powerful central bank tweet about? The comedic possibilities are rich! I’m envisioning a drunken Bernanke reaching for his Blackberry one night and tweeting:

“printing more money lol”

“omg i cant blieve i just tweeted that! omg tim is going to kill me #fml”

“how do you delete tweets?”

“you guyz srsly its not inflation its WINflation! #winning”

“@ whtvr i do NOT look like this http://youtu.be/GTQnarzmTOc

“@whitehouse how do you handle all these hate tweets? i gotta couple ppl for your targeted kill list lmao

“spilled wine all over my tie”

“@ http://bit.ly/u7TnZS wtf is this bs??? srsly stop tweeting me!”

“@ whtvr ur animation sux and your bloggers arent funny at all.”

“Dear pollens upsetting my allergies, plese go away and die. sincerely -Ben ps: luuvvvv my bffs for taking me out tonight!”

“@ at the grocery store and omg this stuff IS gettin more expensive! i gotta stop printing so much lol -nah jk rofl!”

“awww snap paul krugman just got here! #awesome”

Okay, that’s enough. I could seriously stay up all night writing these. The best part of this has been watching all the things people are tweeting to the Federal Reserve. Just type their handle @FederalReserve into Twitter’s search bar to watch the hilarity unfold in real time. Here were a few of my favorites:

Thanks to the @FederalReserve arrival, the value of all tweets will collapse by 98% in a few years.

Dear @FederalReserve Please print oil. Now

Thanks to Operation Tweet, maximum message length on Twitter will now inflate by 2% per year @FederalReserve

As of this morning @FederalReserve is officially on twitter. Great news as it means US debt will have to be limited to at most 140 zeroes!

Hey Ben Bernanke now that you’re on twitter @FederalReserve will you be live tweeting which banks are getting cash at 0.00001 in interest?

Stop printing money out of thin air! @federalreserve #EndTheFed

@RonPaul Dude, new to Twitter: @federalreserve. You can audit their tweets.

@FirstTeamTommy @seanhackbarth @federalreserve shall we expect Quantitweetive Tweasing to marginalize the value of each tweet?

Horrible idea. RT @federalreserve: Welcome to the official Twitter channel of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System

Instantly becomes most boring feed on Twitter? RT @thehill: The Fed joins Twitter at @federalreserve http://bit.ly/zV8ybd

@federalreserve gaining about 1,000 followers per hour as mobs of curious rubberneckers line up to witness the train wreck

So yeah– maybe next time instead of throwing us a lame bone like a boring Twitter account, the Federal Reserve should give us some real transparency and let us in for a full, top-to-bottom, public audit of the institution that creates our money.

And yes, we will so be tweeting this post to the Fed.

Happy reading, interns!
