Money Monday: Pirate Medallion Changes from Silver to Gold

September 3rd, 2012

This pirate doubloon appears silver at first, but bring it into the sun and it mysteriously changes to gold. Of course it isn’t truly silver or gold in the precious metal sense. It’s just a color change. But it’s a pretty spectacular illusion and would make a pretty awesome gift for any precious metal enthusiast who also happens to go to the occasional pirate party.

The pirate medallions are made by  a company called Del Sol who’s patented “Spectrachrome” coating changes colors in sunlight. The color-changing crystals were invented by NASA back in the ‘70s but Del Sol developed the technology into its own Spectrachrome inks. Del Sol started as small retail cart in Murray, Utah in 1994 and now owns hundreds of stores in dozens of countries. They also make apparel, fashion accessories, nail polish and a variety of other little trinkets that change color, including some other pirate garb. Defiantly worth checking out: www.DelSol.com

About the Author: Davi Barker

In grade school Davi refused to recite the pledge of allegiance because he didn't understand what it meant. He was ordered to do as he was told. In college he spent hours scouring through the congressional record trying to understand this strange machine. That's where he discovered Dr. Ron Paul. In 2007 he joined the End The Fed movement and found a political home with the libertarians. The Declaration of Independence claims that the government derives its power “from the consent of the governed." He does not consent.
