Hyunjoo Kim Slapped a TSA Agent

January 2nd, 2013

We’ve got no love for the TSA over here, except maybe that love-your-enemy-to-change-them kind of love. We’ve awarded Rebel of the Week to quite a few activists over the years for their heroic responses to the State’s mandatory sexual molestations. Including Meg McLain who won our Zoe Taylor Award last year in part for her TSA activism. But this is the first instance in which I’ve ever heard of a victim defending their body with force. It’s probably because she’s from South Korea and hasn’t been property acclimated to the totalitarianism we all saw progress gradually. We’re the frogs who have been stewing in the pot for a while, and she’s the frog who was tossed directly into boiling water, to reuse an apt metaphor. So today, we recognize and honor Hyunjoo Kim for her heroic response to the wondering fingers of the State.

Kim, 39, is accused of slapping an officer of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and shoving another several times at the Orlando International Airport. She was visiting Florida from South Korea and before boarding a flight home she reportedly objected to the agents unwanted advances, not to mention her lotion bottles being confiscated at the security checkpoint. During a “routine pat-down” she became irate and fought back.

This from the Orlando Sentinel:

“She swung several times at TSA Officer [Janine] Pagan and eventually struck her with an open hand on the right side of her face, causing redness and soreness,” Kim’s arrest report shows. “Kim then turned and shoved TSA Officer [Pamela] Soto in the chest several times in an attempt to get her bag.”

An off-duty police officer reported seeing Kim screaming and swearing at touchy officers. Kim was arrested and charged with two counts of battery on transit agents. However, the TSA agents were not charged with sexual assault, or even trying to get fresh without buying her dinner first.

We could look at this as a huge misunderstanding. Maybe there was a language barrier. But I prefer to see it as a perfectly healthy reaction to being fondled against your will. Good for her.

About the Author: Davi Barker

In grade school Davi refused to recite the pledge of allegiance because he didn't understand what it meant. He was ordered to do as he was told. In college he spent hours scouring through the congressional record trying to understand this strange machine. That's where he discovered Dr. Ron Paul. In 2007 he joined the End The Fed movement and found a political home with the libertarians. The Declaration of Independence claims that the government derives its power “from the consent of the governed." He does not consent.
