Rebel of the Week: Doctor Ron Paul
March 8th, 2012You know, I’m not really in any position to be making political endorsements, but what I can say unequivocally is that I love Doctor Paul like family. You can debate how much impact he actually has on the political establishment, but you cannot deny that Ron Paul has changed the hearts and minds of so many people that the impact of his words will reverberate throughout the culture for generations to come. This is a man who stands in a den of thieves and liars and has planted his principles so deep in the Earth that he has forced the world to revolve around him. For this reason, and so many others, I am honored to declare Ron Paul the Rebel of the Week.
The pretense of this nomination is that Ron Paul waved a Silver Circle 1 oz. Rebel Round in Ben Bernanke’s face last week to make a point about alternative currency. We’ve also learned that his Legislative Director, Norman Singleton won a Rebel Round in a contest a couple years ago that he now keeps on his desk, and Ron Paul’s Policy Directer in charge of monitoring the Federal Reserve, Lydia Mashburn bought one off our table at CPAC this year. But we suspect the specific Rebel Round in Paul’s hand is the one our Marketing Director, Megan Duffield gave him at a Mises Institute event back in January. He must have been holding onto it since then, and why wouldn’t he. Silver has appreciated about 20% since then.
But the fact is that this small gesture pales in comparison to a life’s work of public and poignant rebellion against the Federal Reserve. There is not an anti-Fed Rebel anywhere whose thought and passion has not been shaped in part by this man. In 2003, after 15 years of public indoctrination I was essentially a socialist, but I was in the habit of reading the congressional record when I came across his October 31, 2001 speech, The Foolishness of Fiat and it changed my life forever. I voted for Ron Paul in 2004, even though he wasn’t running.
The genius of Ron Paul’s message is that he successfully appeals to every segment of the liberty movement. His common sense positions on the big issues of the day, like foreign war and civil liberties are constantly attracting those on both sides of the aisle who are curious about libertarianism. His rigid fidelity to his oath of office more than satisfies the minarchists and Constitutionalists in the movement. And for we few fringe radicals he occasionally let’s slip some subtle sign that perhaps his heart is with us. When he described himself as a “Voluntaryist” to both the Pete Eyre of Motorhome Diaries and Adam Kokesh of Adam vs. The Man the mainstream viewer had probably never heard the word before, but others recognized it as a hat tip to those in the movement who advocate complete liberty without the State. At a campaign rally in 2007 he told a crowd of supporters “The message of liberty unites us. There are liberals here and conservatives. There may even be an anarchists or two.” And the crowd roared. Many have noticed that on multiple occasions when his colleagues sport the red and blue ties of their respective parties Ron Paul wears a black and gold tie, which are the colors of the market-anarchist flag.
I suspect, and so do many around here that Ron Paul’s choice to bring a Rebel Round to that hearing was no happy accident, because he wasn’t talking about the gold standard that day. He was talking about competing alternative currencies. In 2011 he introduces the Free Competition in Currency Act, to clarify once and for all that projects like Liberty Dollar and other rebel silver projects should be perfectly legal, which is what he advocated in the hearing. This was understood by many mainstream spectators as a step back from his typical position of abolishing the Fed, but in reality, if you understand the economics of it, it’s a much more radical proposal. The Silver Circle Rebel Round is an artifact from a fictional future where it is explicitly illegal to coin competing currencies, but the Rebels do it anyway. By choosing that coin, and not an American Eagle as was misreported, he is in effect saying, “Pass all the laws you want, because the Rebels will mint silver no matter what you say. This is an idea whose time has come, and if you fight it the black market will embrace it.” But even if he wasn’t saying that, I’m saying it, and I credit him with the education to know it’s true.
