‘Audit This’: NFL Lineman Mathis Relieves Himself on IRS Office
May 17th, 2013Americans are rightly frustrated with the IRS. Lawmakers have crafted the most obscure, complex, difficult-to-understand tax code possible, and citizens often find themselves facing steep tax debts after misunderstanding the filing process. Meanwhile, the IRS itself has been consumed by scandal this week, as reporters recently uncovered that the agency has been applying tax policies differently to organizations based on their political views.
Just as the public’s frustration hit its peak, Mashable is reporting that Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Evan Mathis posted a picture of himself urinating on an IRS branch office via his personal . In related anti-tax and pop culture news, Reason Magazine is now covering a rumor that we scooped in this blog a few weeks back: WWE wrestler Kane, also known as the libertarian activist Glenn Jacobs, is so upset about Tennessee Republican Senator Lamar Alexander’s quest to create an internet sales tax that Jacobs is considering challenging Alexander in the GOP primary.
Taxpayers Live Vicariously Through Evan Mathis
Moments after the above picture appeared on Mathis’ Instagram account with the caption “audit this,” taxpayers everywhere began sharing it far and wide on social media websites. Mistrust of the IRS is at an all-time high as the agency struggles to save face after bureaucrats were caught misusing their positions to promote their personal political agendas. Recent tax increases have also frustrated cash-strapped families during a time when the economy sputters along at a snail’s pace.
When one considers that football and tax protests are both arguably ingrained in America’s national DNA, for an NFL football player to post a picture of himself urinating on the IRS building is instantly classic in its Americanism. Dissent, after all, is the true definition of American-style patriotism. Evan Mathis’ protest tapped into the national mood and expressed the frustrations of taxpayers around the country.
Kane to Lay the Metaphorical Smack Down on Lamar Alexander?
Speaking of famous athletes that dislike excessive taxation, WWE Tag Team Champion Kane, also known as Glenn Jacobs, appears to be considering a run for senate against Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander. Jacobs has taken a strong position against the Senator’s internet tax increase.
Tennessee liberty activists have been attempting to convince Kane to run for years, noting his high public profile and studies in Austrian Economics as reasons to support his candidacy. Wrestling is very popular in Tennessee, and Alexander is in trouble with local Tea Party groups after attempting to overturn Rand Paul’s filibuster of the President’s gun control initiatives. Kane is well-spoken and intelligent and would likely surprise voters with his intellect were he to debate the unpopular Senator. If Jacobs were to run, he is expected to challenge Alexander in the Republican primary.
This has been a rough week for the IRS. Maybe all this chaos is a sign that it’s time to repeal the federal income tax once and for all.
