Member of Pussy Riot Disappears During Prison Transfer
November 5th, 2013Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, one of the best-known members of the anti-Putin punk rock group Pussy Riot, was convicted by the Russian government of “hooliganism” after participating in a performance art stunt in 2012 and subsequently received a two-year prison sentence. She recently made news by engaging in a hunger strike to raise awareness to the abuses that go on in the Russian prison system. She asked to be transferred to a different prison colony during her protest, a request which appears to have been granted. However, The Daily Beast is reporting that, ever since she was transferred, her husband has lost contact with her and can no longer determine her whereabouts. Was she “disappeared” for her anti-Putin stances or is she simply lost in an inefficient, slow-moving gulag transit system? Keep an eye on this developing story as more information becomes available.
