Bernie is one of the heroes of Silver Circle. Her tactical expertise makes her one of the most capable members of Zoe Taylor’s rebel crew when it comes to the execution of an intricate plan. In the movie, she can be seen wearing a belt affixed with a rainbow-colored assortment of cigarette lighters. Though the specifics of her personal life didn’t come up in the plot, the rainbow lighters symbolize Bernie’s lesbian sexual orientation.
The Life of Bernie
The fast pace of the Silver Circle plot didn’t leave room for a deep examination of Bernie’s personal life. As such, her sexual orientation isn’t necessarily noticeable based on events from the storyline. The rainbow lighters were included in her outfit to symbolize that aspect of her character.

LGBT Community Scores Huge Victories in Hawaii and Illinois This Week
In real life, Hawaii and Illinois legalized same-sex marriage over the past week. The number of states allowing gay marriage has risen to 15 and will reach 16 when Illinois Governor Pat Quinn finally signs the bill that passed his state’s legislature last week. The District of Columbia allows for same-sex marriage, so Bernie would be legally eligible to marry.
Freedom wins when individuals, no matter their sexual orientation, are given equal protection under the law. Marriage is a private and voluntary union between free people, and the state has no right to prevent individuals from associating with each other. Many states have already lifted same-sex marriage bans, and hopefully even more will overturn them as the future unfolds. Governments have done a poor job providing equal protection when it comes to marriages. The state should have never gotten involved in regulating love and nuptials in the first place.
That said, keep an eye out for Bernie’s rainbow lighter belt while you are watching Silver Circle. It symbolizes her sexual orientation. She also wears a Bakunin T-shirt. In the future, you might get a chance to check out an in-depth exploration of her character.
