Sh*t People Say Contest!
January 27th, 2012There’s this meme floating around on YouTube. There’s these videos satirizing the ridiculous things people say, usually broken down by demographic. . . . . . Just a whole lot of Shit. I found a lot of them pretty racist, or at least collectivist by design. I don’t usually go for that sort of humor, but then I found one that tickled my prejudices right where I like it.
Just brilliant! Best of all, completely true. Will Potter, who created the video says it’s all based on statements the FBI has actually made in court, in the press, or to activists themselves. Being married to a civil rights attorney, I’ve heard most of these before. Green Is The New Red looks mostly liberal, but they’ve chosen a rallying cry everyone can get behind: Activism is not Terrorism. Americans allegedly have the Constitutional right to political activism, but activists on both sides of the aisle (or no aisle at all) are being targeted by the programs created to surveil terrorists.
The first half of the video exposes the fact that FBI agents can legally lie to you, but lying to them, even by accident is a crime. Agents will say anything to trick activists into talking to them without an attorney present, but minor discrepancies in an activist’s recollection have been construed as lying and used to coerce further cooperation.
The second half of the video reminded me of an old saying among political activists. “If you want to know who the undercover agent is, it’s the guy advocating violence.” In fact, if you look at most so-called terrorism in the US there’s an undercover agent supplying the attacker with money, equipment, supplies and anything else that might help the agent advance their career.
Here’s interesting factoid. I can’t legally tell you not to talk to the FBI, even though it’s perfectly within your constitutional rights to remain silent. If I did, it could be construed as hindering an investigation. At least that’s what the civil rights attorneys tell me. But rest assured if I could tell you that, I would… but I’m not. If you want to know your legal rights in that situation check out the booklet “If An Agent Knocks” from the Center for Constitutional Rights.
Now let’s have some fun.
What I’m not seeing is a lot of liberty themed “Shit People Say” videos. So, I’m going to give you a little incentive. I’d like to see some good “Shit Statists Say” videos or “Shit Ben Bernanke Says” videos. I don’t want to limit you. Feel free to get creative. I’m partial to funny hats. But the creator of the best liberty themed “Shit People Say” video wins a brand new issue of the first chapter of the Silver Circle graphic novel, from my own collection. See how the whole adventure begins as an agent from the Department of Housing Stability investigates a case of arson and discovers an underground rebellion.
