October 11th, 2013The time has come once again for one of the biggest comic events in the United States. The Silver Circle team is in the Big Apple for New York Comic Con 2013. Amid all of the cool cosplay, new comic releases, and television stars, we discovered some anti-authoritarian standouts that comic and sci-fi fans should check out. Dark Horse Comics has a brand new graphic novel series, , which just released its first chapter. Also, L. Anna Lenz’ sci-fi book series just unleashed . Join us after the break for an overview of these like-minded creative projects.
Enter the Mandala: Gather the 144,000
Dark Horse Comics’ Mandala is promoting itself through an initiative called Enter the Mandala, in which the comic’s creators hope to enlist the help of 144,000 people to “awaken” others to the series. The effort is being marketed via a mysterious splash page. This type of viral, fan-involved marketing allows real-world supporters to feel connected to Mandala‘s fictional universe.
Dark Horse summarizes the plot of Stuart Moore and Bruce Zick’s Mandala with the following description, “The Earth—here and now. Humankind is secretly enslaved by a global mind-control cage called the GRID. Mike Morningstar and his spiritual spec-ops unit ‘The Thirteen’ must alter time and take down the GRID before it’s too late. As fiction meets reality, The Thirteen need your help if they are to succeed in awakening humanity and changing the future. Are you awake?” Mandala’s dystopian themes look promising, and its unique marketing rhetoric is creating a strong buzz at New York Comic Con 2013.
The Opree Legacy
The Opree Legacy, a new independent sci-fi and fantasy book series by L. Anna Lenz, presents a “dark world in crisis” that may seem somewhat familiar to Silver Circle fans. The book was crowd-funded via Kickstarter, and an initial volume (which features a misprint that may be collectible later) is up for .
The plot of The Opree Legacy has been described in the following way, “Seventeen years after a devastating attack on the world’s grandest empire, the cities in Opree have rebuilt. A new age of technology, growth and prosperity is just over the horizon, but something is brewing in the quiet dawn…. a revolution in the West, and in the East, an ancient darkness rises.” Shadow Fox Publishing describes the book as a “complex wide-ranging story with multiple plot lines [that] may remind readers of Game of Thrones or Dune, but… this contemporary story deals with current issues like racism, distant wars, and corrupt governments. It is darkly etched in blood and steel. Though it describes the Opree Empire, readers will recognize our Earth, and our own times.”
